Port of Lerwick

Ferries and Ferry Companies Operating
(Lerwick, Shetland Islands, Scotland , UK)

Two ferry companies operate frequent sailings from Lerwick. Northlink is the main provider, with daily sailings to Aberdeen and thrice weekly stop-offs at Kirkwall in the Orkneys.

Smyril Line operates weekly services to Scandinavian destinations.

NorthLink

The Lerwick to Aberdeen route has been operated by NorthLink since 2002 and there are two daily sailings direct to Aberdeen (night and day), including three weekly ferries making a stop off at Kirkwall (Orkney Isles). Sailing times are around 14 hours in each direction.

Northlink operates two identical types of ship, the Hjaltland and the Hrossey. Both ferries are conventional yet fast and offer a large vehicle deck and 100 cabins. There are shops, restaurants and bars onboard and the entertainment on the night ferries is lively. NorthLink's fleet of ferries also provides excellent disabled access, with wide aisles and adapted toilets.

Smyril Line

Smyril Line operates passenger and freight ferries. There is one sailing per week between Lerwick and Hanstholm, northern Denmark, and another weekly sailing to Torshavn in the Faroe Islands. The same ferry runs a continuous loop and only operates in the summer.

Smyril Line runs the Norröna, which is a cruise-class ferry with outstanding facilities and the capacity to hold 1,500 passengers and hundreds of cars. The cabins are of good quality, while standard facilities include shops, cafés, restaurants and bars.
